Oh so Concerning - Are Your Baby’s Clothes Really Safe?
Salaam, hi, merhaba and welcome to this Lullaby Bloom Blog!
Would you dress your baby in something containing toxic chemicals without even knowing it?
As parents, we check everything. The ingredients in their food, the products on their skin, even the detergent we use. But one thing many of us don’t think twice about is clothing.
And yet, what touches our baby’s skin all day matters just as much.
The uncomfortable truth about fast fashion baby clothes
In 2025, a Greenpeace report revealed something quite worrying. After testing garments from ultra fast fashion brand Shein, 32% of items contained hazardous chemicals exceeding safety limits, including children’s clothing.
Among the substances found were:
- Phthalates, linked to impaired development
- PFAS, associated with long term health risks and environmental damage
- Heavy metals like lead and cadmium, harmful to brain development
- Formaldehyde, a known skin irritant
These chemicals don’t just sit in the fabric. Babies can absorb them through their skin, inhale them, or ingest them, because let’s be honest, everything ends up in their mouths.
And it doesn’t stop there. These substances can also enter our waterways during washing, contributing to long term environmental harm.
What seems like a simple, affordable outfit can carry a hidden cost.
Why this matters so much for babies
Babies are not just small adults.
Their skin is thinner, more absorbent, and far more sensitive. Their immune systems are still developing, and their natural behaviours such as touching, chewing, and exploring increase exposure.
As highlighted in our fabric guide, chemicals and harsh dyes in clothing can lead to:
- Skin irritation
- Allergies
- Eczema flare ups
- Discomfort from non breathable fabrics
What they wear should support their comfort, not compromise it.
So what should we be choosing instead?
This is where sustainable, certified fabrics really matter.
Not just natural sounding fabrics, but ones that are properly tested and verified.
When choosing baby clothing, look out for:
- GOTS® Certified Organic Cotton, grown without toxic pesticides or harmful chemicals
- OEKO TEX® Standard 100, tested for over 100 harmful substances
-
Breathable materials, like muslin and organic cotton to keep baby cool and comfortable
As we explored in our earlier guide, Organic Cotton stands out for being soft, breathable, and gentle on sensitive skin, making it one of the safest choices for little ones.
Not everything “natural” is truly safe
This was something I personally found quite surprising.
Some fabrics marketed as eco friendly, like bamboo viscose, go through heavy chemical processing to turn the raw material into fabric.
So the key thing to remember is simple.
It’s not just what a fabric is called, it’s how it’s made.
A small choice that makes a big difference
Choosing sustainable baby clothing doesn’t mean being perfect.
It simply means being a little more aware.
Asking:
- What is this made from?
- Has it been tested for harmful chemicals?
-
Is it safe for my baby’s skin?
Because at the end of the day, our babies don’t need lots of clothes, they need the right ones.
(And if you’ve read my “How many baby clothes do I really need?” blog, you’ll know I’m always about quality over quantity!)
Finally…
In a world of fast fashion, next day delivery, and endless choice, it’s easy to focus on what looks good.
But when it comes to our babies, what matters most is what we don’t see.
Because what touches your baby’s skin should never be a question mark.
