Salaam, hi, merhaba and welcome to this Lullaby Bloom Blog!
It’s one of the first questions every parent asks…and no wonder! Baby clothing sizes can be really confusing. One brand’s ‘0–3 months’ might fit like another brand’s ‘newborn’.
This Guide is here to help get rid of the confusion, and focuses on a few Tips when choosing baby sizes.
What size baby clothes should I buy for a newborn? Should I buy newborn or 0–3 months clothes? How long do babies stay in each clothing size?
We all get really excited buying clothes for our new baby, or buying gifts for a new baby and could buy millions of clothes, but really we should consider the right size to buy so that the outfit doesn’t get left unused.
Though it may seem like common sense to buy the ‘Newborn’ size for your Newborn baby, it’s probably best to size up a little bit, and is worth having some 0–3 month items ready, as heavier Newborns might skip the Newborn size completely. According to Medical News Today, the average birth weight of a full-term baby boy is 3.3 kilograms (7 lb 4 oz) and 3.2 kg (7 lb 1 oz) for a baby girl.
Whereas a premature baby can be anywhere between 0.60 kg (1 lb 5oz) – 3.6 kg (7lbs 15 oz) depending on when they were born, so when they’re weighed and measured then it’ll definitely be worth getting the right preemie clothing for them.
Should I buy Baby clothes by Age Groups?
Most baby clothes are labeled by age, like ‘0–3 months’ or ‘3–6 months’ - which seems simple enough.
But the truth is that all babies grow at their own pace, and they come in all shapes and sizes! My baby was quite a tall baby, so we had to go straight to 3 month sizes (and friends and family had gifted us so many cute newborn outfits!), while others stay in newborn clothes for weeks.
It’s easier to go up in size or grow into something, than to have something too small. Lullaby Bloom’s Bodysuits and Peek-a-Boo Sleepsuits start from 0-3 months.
Five Handy Parent Tips for Choosing the Right Size:
-
Size Up When Between Sizes
If your baby is between sizes, go for the larger one, guaranteed that they’ll grow into it in no time! -
Check Baby’s Weight & Height After Birth
Once your baby is born, use their actual measurements to choose the right size, not just their age. -
Always Use a Size Chart
Every brand fits differently! Check their Baby Size Chart to find the best fit for your little one. -
Don’t Remove Tags Too Early
Keep the tags on and the receipts if bought in the shop until you're sure the clothes will fit, just in case you need to exchange. -
Snug Sleepwear is a Must
Sleepwear should always fit closely to keep your baby safe, and nice and comfy during rest.
US and European Sizing
So to add to the sizing confusion, there is also US sizing and European baby clothing sizing (sigh). The main difference is that US sizing tends to be in Age Groups (0-3 months, 3-6 months etc), whereas European sizing usually takes the Length/Height in cm (e.g., 56, 62, 68 cm).
But once again, every US and European brand will have its own sizing, so just check.
Lullaby Bloom’s Size Chart

Finally….
Baby clothing sizes can be confusing, but knowing your baby’s weight and height makes it easier. Size up when in doubt, it’s better for comfort and longer wear. Always check the size chart, keep tags on until you’re sure, and go for snug sleepwear to keep your baby safe and cozy.
